It’s a great week to be a Belgian beer lover in New York. Premier importers Vanberg & DeWulf and 12% Imports both hold tastings this week as well as brewery nights with Allagash and Ommegang. This weekend is also Dark Lord Day, one of the most revered days on a beer-geek’s calendar as well as Tap NY and – one of my favorite events of the year – the Sly Fox Goat Race and Bock Festival!
THE WEEK AHEAD
12% Imports Tasting – Bierkraft, Brooklyn – 7:00pm
Brian Ewing’s 12% Imports has a simple goal… to travel the world in search of the finest beer and bring it back to America. In just a few years, 12% has risen as one of America’s premier Belgian beer importers alongside Sheldon Brothers and Vanberg & DeWulf (see Thursday). Tonight, Brian holds a free tasting of some of his newest imports including the much lauded Evil Twin (see last week’s beer calendar) and a new collaboration between Sint Canarus and Bierkraft’s Ben Granger. Seating is limited so arrive early.
Allagash Night – Double Windsor, Brooklyn, NY
Windsor Terrace’s (or South Slope’s if you work in real estate) Double Windsor is quickly rising to the ranks as one of Brooklyn’s better beer bars. Forgoing excessive tap lines, they take a strong, curated approach with a well rounded selection of outstanding beers. Tonight is their second Wednesday night Brewery series with one of my favorite American brewer’s… Allagash. This is a great chance to try some impressive Belgian-inspired beers. Vrienden, an Allagash/New Belgium collaboration beer, is my current obsession and you can snag a glass tonight along with Big Little, their rare, hoppy, session ale.
Vanberg & DeWulf Celebrates 30 Years – Jimmy’s No. 43 – 5:00pm – 8:00pm
Craft beer really wasn’t craft beer back in 1981. Ken Grossman was just getting Sierra Nevada off the ground and the new emerging trend was “Microbreweries.” Trying to get a quality, imported beer was near impossible. Enter Vanberg & DeWulf, what can be considered the forefathers of European beer importers. V&D are responsible for importing, among other things, the quintessential Saison Dupont. Tonight they bring a massive portfolio of taps and bottles to Jimmy’s to celebrate 30 years of making drinking in America a better. Congrats!
Real Alewives of NYC – Jimmy’s No. 43
The Real Alewives are a group of craftbeer focused ladies that gather once a month and discuss their love of ales. Tonight they talk Pale Ales from British to American. Make sure you contact the ladies if you are coming as this is a closed event.
Beer At The Big House – Historic Burlington County Prison Museum Courtyard, NJ
Sometimes the best thing about drinking craft beer is the places it takes you. This afternoon, it takes you to a historic prison in Burlington, NJ. High Street Bar & Grill hosts their third annual Beer at the Big House. Bring a chair or a blanket and sip on beers from Yards, Weyerbacher, Lagunitas, Allagash, Troegs, Founders, Sixpoint and more. Tours of the museum go on throughout the day.
PICK OF THE WEEK! – Sly Fox Bock Festival & Goat Race – Phoenixville, PA
If you think going to a prison to drink is cool, then how about a giant, strip mall parking lot in Pennsylvania to knock back German style beers and watch goats race! That’s right, thousands head to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania this afternoon for the twelfth annual Sly Fox Bock Festival & Goat Race. Sip on Slacker Bock, Helles Bock, Instigator Doppelbock, two Eisbocks (usually Slacker and Instigator) and a Maibock while you mingle with goats… what more could you want?
