NYC Beer Events Calendar: April 4 – 10

Last week was slow for me, I rested, relaxed, and recovered from a bit of sickness. And speaking of sickness, how good were those Captain Lawrence beers? This week we see another rising start in the craft beer world – Vermont’s Hill Farmstead Brewery – descend upon NYC. Plus, its the annual Blue Point Cask Ale Festival hosting an impressive 100+ casks of beer. Enjoy!

Brasserie D’AChouffe & Ommegang Gnommegang Release Kickoff – BXL East
Celebrate the release of Gnommegang – Brewery Ommegang’s first beer using a strain other than the house yeast – this evening at one of the city’s more under-appreciated Belgian bar/restaurants… BXL East. Expect other tasty Ommegang treats on tap as well.
Wednesday, April 6th
Strong Ales Style Event – Blind Tiger Ale House
April is strong beer month at the Blind Tiger and they kick things off tonight with eleven new heavy hitters on tap. Most the these kegs have been aged – some going back as far as 2005 – to mellow them out. If you like your beer big then this is for you.

Captain Lawrence Night – Barcade
While we saw the sour side of Captain Lawrence last week, this week they bring their more traditional offerings which, in actuality, are not all that traditional. Highlights include the Imperial Smoked Porter – the base beer for the Smoke from the Oak series – and an uncommon keg of the Winter Rye.

Cisco Brewers Night – The Pony Bar
Nantucket’s Cisco Brewers swing by The Pony Bar tonight with 10 tap lines and possibly a cask of beer. I haven’t drank Cisco beer so I can’t tell you much beyond that.

Bronck’s Beer Company Launch Event – Bronx Ale House
Apparently the Bronx has a healthy brewing history (who knew!) and Bronck’s Beer Company is looking to revitalize that tradition. Tonight, New York’s newest brewery showcase their first two brews, The Pelham Bay IPA and The Woodlawn Weiss.

IDRUNKTHAT PICK OF THE WEEK
Hill Farmstead Night – Rattle ‘n Hum, New York, NY
If you read this blog with any frequency, you know that Hill Farmstead holds a special place in my heart. Sean Hill’s Vermont brewery, to me, represents the future of American beer. Forgoing bizarre adjuncts, extreme ABVs and other trendy beer tricks, Sean simply makes damn fine beer. From pale ales to saisons, these beers exemplify the craft in craft beer. Swing by tonight to taste the brewery’s portfolio and don’t miss out on Phenomenology, their black saison, and Everett which is possibly my favorite porter in the world right now (it is tied with the Nogne O porter).

Beers Gone a Rye & Steampunk Circus – Institute Bar, Philadlephia, PA
I love unique beer events. Tasty beer in a glass is great but, these days, if you want to keep me in the bar for more than an hour or two you really need to up the ante. Enter Beers Gone a Rye & Steampunk Circus. In addition to the seven different rye beers on tap, there is also steam punk art, rye inspired food dishes, rye whisky tasting and, yes, circus games outside the bar. If you go, be sure to check out the rare keg of New Holland Charkoota Smoked Rye Double Bock

Blue Point Cask Ale Festival – Blue Point Brewery, Patchogue, NY
Long Island’s biggest cask ale festival, the Blue Point Cask Ale Festival has long been the place to drink cask ale in New York state. Held in a giant tent outside of the Blue Point brewery, the afternoon features 30+ breweries, 100+ casks of beer, live music and BBQ. This event tends to sell out so buy your tickets now or miss out.

Hops for Hope – Moonshine, Brooklyn
Help support disaster relief in Japan with a $5 donation at the door. Then, drink $5 pints of Kelso and Brooklyn Brewery beers with 100% of the sales going to The American Red Cross: Japan Earthquake & Pacific Tsunami and The Humane Society: International Disaster Fund.

Sunday, April 10th
Hill Farmstead Brunch – Blind Tiger Ale House
If you did not get enough from Vermont’s Hill Farmstead brewery on Friday night, then swing by the Tiger this afternoon when they will tap no less than five HF kegs. No word on the taplist so check back towards the end of the week for more details. ten kegs!
